Please note that if you prefer a smaller app that caches online maps worldwide, you can explore the More by GrangerFX section below and try the free Scenic Map app. However, if you require an offline map of the entire USA in a single large download, You Need A Map is the perfect choice. The paid versions of this app include built-in maps with full resolution terrain features.

While your iPhone provides an excellent online map, one wrong turn without cell phone signal can leave you lost. That's where You Need A Map comes in. It offers the fastest route back to the highway and provides information on alternate roads and potential obstacles like streams or cliffs.

You Need A Map is an extensive application by design. It includes every geographical feature across the USA, including mountains, hills, streams, lakes, ponds, freeways, highways, local roads, tracks, buildings, trails, railways, points of interest, and more. With such comprehensive coverage, this app enables you to determine your exact location and explore your surroundings anywhere in the country.

Unlike most navigation apps for iPhones and iPads that rely on transferring maps from internet servers, You Need A Map stores maps directly on your device. This means you won't experience slow loading times in areas with limited coverage or complete unavailability in wilderness settings where a map would be most valuable. This software renderer is incredibly fast and provides high-quality graphics specifically optimized for mobile devices – a true game-changer.

If you have a cellular or WiFi internet connection, You Need A Map offers satellite image overlays that add breathtaking detail and realism to the maps. By tapping preset 2 or 4 while the Online Map feature is enabled, you can uncover hidden details not visible at ground level. This takes moving maps to a whole new level of functionality and visual appeal.

To enable GPS tracking, simply tap the arrow in the toolbar. As you move, the app will generate a track file that you can replay. Additionally, You Need A Map allows you to import GPX tracks from other programs and play them. When recording or playing a track, the map will center on your current location, rotate towards your direction of travel, and offer smooth animation in either 2D or 3D mode. During track playback, you have control over the playback speed, pause, restart, skip to the end, as well as the option to send your GPX tracks to other apps or email them.

If you want to learn more about a specific map feature, simply click the target icon and center it under the compass rose. This will display its name, feature type, urban area, state, elevation, and coordinates. You'll also see a bearing line back to your current GPS location or from your location to a selected waypoint. Additionally, the status will show your current direction and distance along with the map and GPS elevation, track length, and your speed and direction of travel.

You Need A Map shares the same code as Scenic Map and offers most of the same features. These include various map customization options, customizable waypoints, direction and bearing information, a smoothly scrolling moving map display for driving or flying purposes, city search capabilities, and much more. If you desire even more features, you can access the full feature set of Scenic Map through an in-app purchase, including online maps spanning the entire world.
